Gate Valve

A gate valve has a rectangular gate or wedge that controls fluid flow by moving perpendicular to the flow direction.

These valves are aptly named because they can fully stop or allow fluid flow.

Gate valves are commonly used in fully closed or fully open positions, not for partial regulation.

Handwheel Operation:

  • The handwheel rotates the valve stem, which guides the gate’s position.
  • When the gate is lifted from the flow path, the valve opens; when it returns, the valve closes.
  • Gate valves are not ideal for partial opening due to non-proportional flow rates.
